Safety at the Olympic Games: what was the result?
The World discusses the provisional assessment of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games (JOP) in terms of security and justice. He highlights the absence of attacks and an apparent drop in delinquency in the areas reserved for the JOP, pointing out that the operation of the courts has also been effective. However, these results must be set against the extraordinary resources deployed. These included the full mobilization of security forces, the deferral of vacations, and substantial bonuses.
Although security was maintained without major incidents, the cost of these exceptional measures could have repercussions. Not least budgetary and rule-of-law repercussions. The article also notes an initial failure to sabotage high-speed rail lines. It stresses that the terrorist threat, particularly the endogenous one, has been effectively managed. Despite foiled plans for attacks prior to the Games, the event took place without any major alerts, a fact praised by the national anti-terrorist prosecutor.
The threat of wage cuts
The private security sector, which played a key role in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, faces a serious threat with the government's plan. The aim is to modify tax breaks on low salaries. This reform, targeting salaries between 1.2 and 1.9 times the SMIC, could have catastrophic repercussions. Particularly for companies in the sector, which employ over 185,000 people.
Potential consequences :
- Cost increases Security companies, already in financial difficulty, could see their costs rise by 10 %. This will be borne by their customers, mainly the public sector.
- Job cuts The cost increase could lead to a cascade of redundancies. This could exacerbate the precariousness of the sector.
A lack of understanding of the sector
The Groupement des Entreprises de Sécurité (GES) is expressing its dissatisfaction with this reform, which it deems to be at odds with the efforts made by the sector to guarantee security at the 2024 Olympic Games. Despite their success in securing major events, the government seems to be overlooking the importance of these companies by considering measures that could weaken them.
Call to action
GES calls on the government to reconsider this reform and assess its impact on private security, which is essential to public safety. Without this awareness, the entire sector could be at risk, with serious consequences for national security. GES insists on the need for dialogue to avoid a major crisis, stressing that private security must not be sacrificed without repercussions for the safety of all.
